baby pictureIt's my first ever personal log on 30GO30 - what's the stardate today? I don't want this blog to be all about me, but it is an exercise in accountability, and I want to be honest about my own efforts, good and bad. We're all students here - there is no guru.

What's my motivation?

I'm no acting coach, but I think it's important to remind ourselves why a goal matters to us. Otherwise, it just becomes another item on the to-do list, and in the 21st century, we've all got too many of those.

My motivation to stay healthy came into pretty clear relief this year - my wife and I had a baby girl in July (that's her in the photo, the future skydiver), and I turned 40 just 2 weeks later. I'll be almost 60 when my daughter goes off to college. I want to live long enough to see my daughter grow up, and I want to be healthy enough to enjoy my time with her. It's as simple as that.

What's my plan?

I actually started back to the gym in November, and I'm feeling good about it. The timing was deliberate, though - the 2nd or 3rd month is when my workouts really tend to fall apart. I plateau, that initial motivation wanes, and the waffling beings - "I'll just skip this ONE day", etc.

I like to mix things up a bit, so my plan looks something like this:

  • Monday - Treadmill (30 min)
  • Tuesday - Qigong & Push-ups (5 sets)
  • Wednesday - Elliptical (30 min)
  • Thursday - Qigong & Push-ups (5 sets)
  • Friday - Treadmill (30 min)
  • Saturday - Qigong & Push-ups (5 sets)
Not to sound mysterious or anything, but "Qigong" comes out of the broader world of Chinese martial arts, and, if I had to oversimplify, is sort of like yoga. It's a combination of strength training and breathing exercises. I'm currently doing 5 sets of 13 push-ups, bumping it up each week, shooting for 100 total.

How am I doing?

Two days in, and I'm going strong - not exactly a milestone yet. I want you to keep me honest, though, so I'm making my personal 30-day log live. I'll keep my current challenge on that page, so you can always keep tabs on me. If I start slacking, let me have it.

How about you - any takers on this challenge? Let me know how it's going in the comments. If you're doing a different 30-day project, that's great, too. Tell us about it.

I'm in! I'm doing a combination or Vinyasa Yoga and Running. Right now I have a 5k in March, 8k in April and potentially a half in April or May. Add to that I'm trying to go to 5 yoga classes a week through February.

Yesterday (Friday) was my rest day.
Today (15th) I did a 60 minute yoga bootcamp & sculpt class then ran 5 miles in the afternoon.

Excellent - glad to hear it! I'm thinking about hitting a couple of 5Ks again this year, too, although not sure on timing just yet. I need that excuse to train, if nothing else.

It sounds like an ambitious and worthwhile plan.
